On March 2, 1961, 190 protesters were arrested at a demonstration against segregation on the S.C. Statehouse grounds. They filed suit (Edwards v. South Carolina), which reached the U.S. Supreme Court where their convictions were overturned. This pivotal case has been used as precedent to protect the first amendment rights of protesters ever since.
