The Simple Freebie That Can Turn Most Businesses Into A Customer Magnet

Small, cheap, and oddly powerful — the postcard is making a return.

Not only do these tangible epistolary pieces cut through the digital clutter to spark nostalgia, trust, and action, but for restaurants, bars, cafés, bowling alleys, and other local hangouts, they offer a unique business opportunity.

As Yahoo! Life recently wrote:

In a time seemingly starved for tangible connection, restaurants are leaning into things like postcards that customers can take as keepsakes or to jot down a thank you note for staff.

Spots like Modern Bird in Traverse City, Michigan; PostBoy in New Buffalo, Michigan; and newcomer wine bar Emmy Lou's in Charlotte, North Carolina, have even started to mail postcards for customers who fill out and address them. The latter dispatches about 10 “Cheers from Emmy Lou’s” cards each week, says co-founder Alex Bridges.

At the Parisian-style cocktail bar Bisous in Chicago, general manager Jake Kelly pops a handful of postcards in the mail every week. Each bears the red lipstick kiss that pervades the bar’s branding.

“It brings me a little joy to imagine someone getting one, and [that guest] being like, 'Wow, they actually mailed it,” says Kelly. Selfishly, he says, the small gesture helps people remember the bar and hopefully come back, perhaps with friends.

A simple postcard offered for free to a paying customer while they spend time in an establishment not only gives them something to do while they are there, but it also offers relatively cheap word-of-mouth brand exposure. It can turn first-timers into regulars, drive their acquaintances into new customers, and deliver measurable results — all without blowing an ad budget.

I mean, remember the thrill of finding a handwritten note in the mail? Or the joy of sending one?

That’s exactly what a postcard can provide for customers — a real, tangible moment that feels personal and memorable amid the digital noise. It invites them to connect with others who can revisit a favorite restaurant, try a new cocktail at a local bar, or pop into a cozy café and create new memories in an old way.
